Understanding lived experience to derive insights that help ageing consumers to feel valued, empowered, and connected

What is the Unheard Consumers?

Unheard Consumers is a research centre based at Curtin University (Perth, Australia) dedicated to amplifying the voices and lived experiences of people often overlooked in policy, service design and funding decisions.

Our current focus is on ageing Australians and the evolving ways they wish to live, age in place, and maintain independence and quality of life through care services. By partnering directly with elderly people, families (informal carers), care providers and community groups, we aim to understand what truly matters and how to design systems that support  well-being and lifestyle.

Through rigorous research and collaboration, we seek to challenge assumptions, uncover unmet needs, and contribute evidence that shapes more flexible approaches to care and support.

At Unheard Consumers, we believe that by listening more deeply and designing research innovation, we can help build a future where all consumers, regardless of age, health or circumstance, are heard, respected, and empowered to live a life they value.

What is the Ageing Lifestyle Research?

The Ageing Lifestyle Research group (ALR) is an organisation under the Unheard Consumer Research centre to intent on researching ‘voice of ageing consumers’.

The ALR was founded in Australia and at Curtin University but with local, national and international focus on the experiences of ageing consumers and their families. Through this work, we aim to spark business innovation, influence social understanding, and inform policy decisions that truly reflect the needs and aspirations of ageing people.

What We Do?

  • Help ageing people build self-identity through being valued, empowered and connected; and
  • Improve the social narrative, industry practices and government policies that affect ageing consumers.

Who are the Lived Experience Team?

The Lived Experience Team (LET) works alongside the Unheard Consumer Research and Ageing Lifestyle Research.

Researchers in the team explore the experience of consumption amongst (ageing) consumers to identify cultural, social, and consumer boosters and impediments. Broadly, the impediments derive from socially embedded ageist attitudes, norms, and behaviours that lead to stereotyping, mistreatment, and sidelining of consumers. This often manifests with consumers being discussed and viewed as a burden on society.
